Conquer the Algorithm: A Proven Strategy for Reaching Your Audience
The algorithm SUCKS. I think we can all agree on this one. Posting on social media these days can feel like shouting into the void. You spend hours crafting the perfect image and caption and… crickets.
I’ve been there, and I know how disheartening it can be when you’re trying so hard to grow a following and connect with your audience, but they’re not even seeing your content.
You have two options. Keep doing what you’re doing (likely resulting in giving up, losing your mind, or all the above) OR… hear me out… you could try something different.
A wise man once said (shoutout Alby) that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So if you’re posting the same type of content again and again and it’s not working, but you’re shaking your proverbial fist at the algorithm (which is totally valid, btw!), it might be time to reconsider your approach.
Want to see different results? Shake things up!
Test out:
Different visuals (test new imagery, showcase your products or services differently, show the people behind the curtains, or add a cute dog in the mix – worth a shot!)
Content formats (videos, carousels, single images, memes – diversify your approach)
Messaging angles (try speaking to your audience’s wants, aspirations, fears, and frustrations and see what resonates.)
Copy variations (short and punchy, long storytelling, long informational, funny, emoji-laden, etc.)
Different offers and lead magnets (find fresh ways to grab attention and offer value.)
If something isn’t working, try something else. Then ten more things. Still not hitting the mark? Try twenty more! The point is, consistent experimentation will eventually yield results. It’s not about perfection – it’s about persistence and adaptability.
What Does Going "Viral” Mean for You?
Going “viral” can look different for everyone and it doesn’t have to mean millions of views or likes. For you, it might mean usually getting 20 likes and suddenly seeing 50 on a particular post. That’s progress! It means something you’ve tried is working better than what you were doing before and your audience is responding.
Time to Play Detective
Once you see an outlier, break it down:
What was different about this content?
What messaging angle did you use?
Did you tweak the copy length?
Were you more authentic? Did you infuse more personality?
Figure out what worked and double down. Give your audience more of what resonated with them. Engagement is a two-way street: if you want to connect with your audience, you’ve got to listen to them and deliver what they actually want.
Authenticity Is Key
At the end of the day, it’s about being authentic, delivering value, and meeting them on their level. Whether that’s a helpful tip, a heartfelt story, or a relatable meme, when you give your audience what they want, the returns will follow.
